Clockwise Records began in the Fall of 1996 in Atlanta, Georgia as the brainchild of Carter Tracy and J. Ivcevich (AKA J. Stroke.) Tracy, who had worked for a number of labels locally and abroad, and Ivcevich, a budding producer/DJ, wanted to form a unique label not bound by genre specific restrictions. They wished to create an outlet for the emerging talent and ideas bubbling in the underground of Atlanta and beyond. Clockwise started off by releasing an intriguing solo EP from J. Stroke followed by the well-received and critically acclaimed hip-hop EP from Haute Couture Prophetic. Next came the debut full length from De La Rosa entitled Sleep Method Suite. The record fused experimental, dubbed-out beats with an entire side of Eno like ambience. It was praised by luminaries such as Mix Master Morris and has led to records on diverse labels like Schematic and Hefty. The ambitious Crossed Wires compilation was the next release collecting a fledgling crop of diverse producers from the Atlanta area. This record is still being discovered today for the many eclectic jams it contains. Enigmatic Johnny Ether followed with a stunning LP full of ethnic break beats, tribal jungle, psychedelic hip-hop, and far reaching improvisational, Indian classical musings. Out next was an enhanced CD from the multi-media aural assault team known as Fascia. Live, rapid fire breaks along side grainy 8mm films and Cocteauesk guitar ambience make this a truly unique project. The latest release is the organically soulful slice of hip-hop from Soul Prophetic Sound. The original goal of Clockwise Records was to release timeless electronic music not defined by some market niche or fashion trend genre and to be a creative outlet for the sounds emerging around us. We feel we've done a pretty good job so far and we'll continue to do so 2000 and beyond. Be on the look out for a Crossed Wires II, Soul Prophetic Sound LP, and a compilation featuring Atlanta's finest underground hip-hop groups in co-ordination with Abyss Entertainment entitled, Atlantis Rising Vol. I. |
