Introducing the Audiogalaxy API

After a year of working on our personal streaming service, I’m pleased with where we are. We have some great tech underneath everything, we’ve gotten some great press, and judging by the reviews in the markets, our users really like the service.  So now we want to let other folks build on top of what we’ve done with our API

The idea is simple.  Users run the helper app on their home PC or Mac. The helper scans the computer for music (DRM free MP3, AAC, ALAC, OGG, WMA, or FLAC) and keeps in touch with our servers.  The helper is fast and lightweight and works with collections of over 500K files. Our servers expose an API that makes it easy to work with the music collection remotely. Users don’t have to worry about NATs, firewalls, or picking and choosing the best 5GB of their music collection then waiting for it to upload somewhere.

The API lets you do everything our website or mobile apps can:

  • Browse by artist, album, or genre
  • See, play, edit, or create playlists
  • Search
  • Stream audio encoded as Vorbis (support for raw files is coming soon)
  • View album art
  • Fetch all songs, or a random subset (for shuffle)

So if you’re a developer who loves music, check out the API documentation and let us know what you want to build. If there’s something you need in the API that isn’t supported yet, send us a note and we’ll be happy to help you out.

So, will other music apps on the Android Marketplace be able to incorporate your streaming technology into their own apps with this API? I would love to see Mixzing add streaming to their already awesome music app.

Oooh! Very nice. Would love to see someone like Spotify implement this into their mobile app!

I cannot imagine life without Audiogalaxy, it is simply amazing. Even when taking a train, audio is absolutely smooth. I would use to think a lot about what songs im going to put on my 8gb memory space. Limited space = limited music. But when Audiogalaxy was introduced to me, i didn’t have to do that anymore. Absolutely fantastic innovation. Kudos to the devs ;)
